It’s a storied tradition in American politics: pick on the weakest among us. “Welfare” was (re-)introduced into the national political debate recently. Join me this Thursday at 6 PM on Lehigh Valley Discourse with my guests, Maryann Haytmanek and Kathleen Daugherty, both of whom have decades of expertise on the issue. They’ll talk about the facts, including how many people receive benefits, how much they receive and how many obstacles are in place that are designed to keep people from getting help. They’ll also talk about why such a politically weak constituency, on whom we spend so little money, gets bullied by candidates.
